Composite Technologies for Future Railway Applications

At InnoTrans, we are showcasing two exhibits to demonstrate the potential that tried-and-tested composite technologies from the automotive industry offer for future railway applications.

The composite battery top lid on display combines low weight, mechanical strength, corrosion resistance and integrated EMI (electromagnetic interference) shielding to protect against electromagnetic interference. A resin system from the BÜFA®-Fire Retardant Systems portfolio is used.
Case Study: Battery Top Lid (PDF)

The composite leaf spring is up to 70 % lighter than a comparable conventional steel leaf spring, is corrosion-free and offers improved NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness) characteristics. This opens up interesting possibilities for future chassis and running gear applications in the railway sector.

Both exhibits demonstrate how existing expertise from Automotive series production can serve as a starting point for new composite solutions in the railway sector. The material system, component design and manufacturing process must be specifically tailored to the requirements of the respective application.
