Customised Solutions
It is important to remember that the properties of polyester resin depend on other factors such as the processing conditions and the additives that are used. Those properties can therefore vary from one resin to another. The requirements and characteristics of the application should be carefully considered to achieve the best results. BÜFA Composite Systems has a wide range of sustainable products. Feel free to talk to us about them!

Low-styrene and Styrene-free Resins and Resin Systems
Sustainable solutions have become increasingly important over recent years. In parallel, BÜFA’s product range, including styrene-free and low-styrene products (such as gelcoats and resins), has been growing continuously.
The range includes environmentally-friendly and low emission products and systems that can be used in processing procedures such as fibre spraying, laminating and relining. Low-styrene and styrene-free solutions from BÜFA offer added value when it comes to labelling and efficiency. These products are complemented by BÜFA®-Multicleaner, which is an alternative to acetone.
Resins and Resin Systems for Endless Lamination and Panel Manufacturing
For production processes such as endless lamination and panel manufacturing, BÜFA has unsaturated polyester resins and vinyl ester resins based on ortho-phthalic acid (OP) or dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) in its range. Endless lamination is used in the composites industry to make panels from various materials. Several layers of the materials in question, such as glass fibre or carbon fibre, are bonded with resin in a continuous process. These panels are used in many areas of application, including the construction industry and manufacturing of sports equipment.
The polyester resins for endless lamination and panel manufacturing in the BÜFA portfolio are easy to use and a cost-effective choice for many applications. They have good mechanical properties, including high tensile strength and good elongation at break, which enables their use in structural components. For fire safety components, we offer halogenated resins for translucent applications
Resins and Resin Systems for Manual and Spraying Processes
BÜFA Composite Systems has various resin bases for open processing by hand or spray, including isophthalic acid (IP), bisphenol A (BPA), vinyl ester (VE), neopentyl glycol (NPG) and ortho-phthalic acid (OP) in its range.
Polyester resins can be used in the composites industry in manual and spraying processes. Here the resins are applied in liquid form and then cured. In manual processes, the resin is applied by hand, while in spraying processes a spray gun is used. BÜFA®-Resins cover a wide range of applications with short, medium and long gel times and most are pre-accelerated. They are often used in manual and spraying processes to make components for construction, such as gutters, downpipes and facade panels. They are also suitable for use in boat building and tank and pipe construction (e.g. sewage systems), where they are exposed to increased chemical, mechanical and hydrolysis load. We also offer resins for high mechanical stress in vehicle construction. For mould tooling, too, BÜFA Composite Systems has suitable resins in its portfolio.
They can be processed both by hand and with suitable metering systems from BÜFA Tec.
RTM, Resin Infusion, Vacuum Injection
The trend towards closed-system production processes for fibre composites has been moving at full speed over recent years. This includes processes such as Resin Transfer Moulding (RTM), RTM-light, such as Resin Transfer Moulding (RTM), RTM-light, Resin Infusion and Vacuum Injection. The significant reduction in emissions resulting from using closed-system production processes of this sort is important. The range of production for these technologies is broad and the types of process varied. Along with small piece counts, larger series can be manufactured, including production of both small components with complex geometries and larger components.
BÜFA Composite Systems offers sustainable solutions with the right resin products. The portfolio includes resin bases made from dicyclopentadiene (DPCD), ortho-phthalic acid (OP), vinyl ester urethane (VEU), bisphenol A (BPA) and vinyl ester (VE) - in pre-accelerated or non-pre-accelerated versions. These resins are particularly suitable for making moulded parts of high mechanical quality which may also have to meet strict requirements in terms of chemical resistance and long-term thermal deformation and high resistance to dynamic stress. They are used for manufacturing components for the automotive and commercial vehicle industries and in the marine sector for sports boats and special applications.
Chemically Resistant Applications
The term “tanks & pipes” refers to the construction of containers and pipelines (e.g. in chemical plants, agriculture, sewage systems). The materials used here are exposed to particularly high stress from water, acids, alkalis and changing temperatures. Resins are used that meet the highest requirements in terms of the quality of materials used. Chemical or hydrolytic stress, high resistance to temperatures and good mechanical properties.
BÜFA®-Resins with IP/NPG, BPA/VE, EN/VE resin bases are suitable for these applications.
BÜFA®-Conductive Systems are also worthy of mention in this category. They are used in an increasing number of applications in which greater reliability is required for conductive and antistatic objects or equipment. These must always be used in EX areas. But manufacturers in the boat building industry and in the swimming pool sector make special demands on resins because of the chemical and hydrolytic stress and their strict requirements regarding mechanics and long-term dimensional stability.
Casting Resin Applications and Filled Systems
For applications not involving fibre reinforcement, BÜFA offers transparent casting resins based on ortho-phthalic acid (OP). There is an extensive range of products based on ortho and DCPD for cast mineral applications with very varied requirements. These are often used in filled systems that contain additional materials to provide structure, strength and rigidity. These materials include, for example, mineral fillers such as quartz and aluminium oxide. The use of filled systems makes it possible to adapt the properties of cast resins and meet specific requirements in relation to strength, rigidity and weight.
Cast resin must meet the needs of a wide range of applications, including embedding resin, polymer concrete and artificial marble, casting of furniture ornaments, door fillings, imitation wood and transparent glass-fibre reinforced moulded parts – there are no limits to creativity here. These resins are available pre-accelerated and not pre-accelerated, in a wide range of viscosities, with settings from low to highly reactive.
Mould Tooling Resins
For the production of high-quality moulds, the BÜFA portfolio offers not only individual low-styrene, fast curing and virtually shrink-free tooling resins with various resin bases, but complete solutions precisely adapted to one another – in other words, optimal mould construction systems based on the latest findings in polymer chemistry.
Extreme styrene and temperature resistance, high mechanical resilience, a good degree of gloss over the long term and dimensional stability are important criteria when choosing a reliable mould construction system.
Our latest solutions offer conductive surfaces, enhanced surface quality and extremely high dimensional stability. BÜFA Composites offers an entire mould construction system here, consisting of a gelcoat, a first-layer resin and the actual mould construction resin. The systems have extremely good mechanical performance values, outstanding thermal forming resistance, excellent fibre wetting and particularly low VOC content. The resins are suitable for either hand lamination or a fibre spraying process. Thanks to its low-profile technology, BÜFA®-Tooling Resin can be applied in wall thicknesses of 2 – 12 CSM (Chopped Strand Mat) layers in one work process.
Pressing Processes
Pressing processes are widely used procedures for making GRP moulded parts in medium-sized to large series. A wide range of applications is opening up for fibre-reinforced moulded parts thanks to the fast cycle times and high reproducibility.
BÜFA has a range of appropriate non-pre-accelerated resins in its range. Whether it’s low or medium viscosity, with chemical or high temperature resistance, you will find the right resin in our range.
Winding Process
In the winding process, reinforcing fibres are wound onto a positive core. This process is suitable primarily for the manufacture of components with rotational symmetry, e.g. tanks, containers, pipes and shafts.
Polyester resins with low viscosity are used for this. Depending on requirements, a wide variety of resin bases can be used here, including IP, NPG, OP and DCPD. High or low reactivity, chemical and/or thermal resistance, with or without fire protection – there is a wide choice in the BÜFA product range. In the maritime sector, they meet the quality standards of the Lloyds register, among others.
Pultrusion Process
Pultrusion is an endless production process for continuous manufacturing of composite profiles. Fibres or particles are soaked in resin and then pulled through a mould to produce long, dimensionally stable profiles or pipes, which are then cut to length at the next process stage. The process is named pultrusion because the resulting profile is literally pulled through the steps.
Polyester resins are frequently used in the pultrusion process to make composite materials with high strength and rigidity that have good resistance to chemicals and UV radiation. They are used in various industries, such as the construction, automotive and commercial vehicle sectors. BÜFA has a series of appropriate resins with various resin bases in its range. They are characterised by excellent filler and pigment absorption, thus providing better surface quality.
Halogen-free resins
Halogen-free fire safety resins are used to make composite materials that meet fire safety standards. The halogen-free BÜFA®-Firestop Fire Safety Resins can be used in many combinations and across various processes.
Halogen-free resins are frequently used in the pressing process, pultrusion process and in hand lamination to make composite materials. They are used in various industries, such as the construction and automotive sectors and in public transport – wherever a high level of fire safety is required.
